About Me

"The dance along the artery
The circulation of the lymph
Are figured in the drift of stars"
TS Eliot

Karen is a Nationally Certified Doctor of Oriental Medicine, licensed as a Primary Healthcare Provider in New Mexico and North Carolina, as well as a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner. Her passion for assisting others in healing from digestive disorders stems from her own debilitating experiences with Ulcerative Colitis. Through her extensive training, research and clinical practice she has developed a deep understanding of Root Cause of disease. It is through this understanding that she offers her services in helping others find their unique path to healing digestive issues that are impairing one’s quality of life. Her sophisticated approach involves the latest scientific research on how genetics, environment, diet and lifestyle all contribute to illness. She strongly believes that the Integration of Western biochemistry and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer the deepest potential for healing.

Dr. Mullins book Wake up to the truth Behind Crohn's Disease has gained much recognition in the IBD medical community. As new science has emerged in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, she finds herself on a mission to help bring the information to light, in layman's terms. These discoveries are on the very fringe of medicine, and not widely known to the public. Her association with cutting edge organizations such as Human Para Foundation have helped garner her work and contributions in offering an alternative understanding of Crohn's and Colitis through education.  She is keenly aware that knowledge is power, and passionately assists in pioneering new roads in not only preventing these devastating conditions, but also healing them.

Warrior

— a person who shows great courage, vigor, or aggressiveness

I created Digestive Warrior because I know very intimately how painful it is to struggle with chronic illness. Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at age 15, I have been no stranger to the trials and tribulations of how deeply it can impair one's quality of life. I attended the nation's top Creative and Performing Arts high school for ballet and modern dance, followed by a full scholarship for dance at a private arts college. I suppose it's impossible to articulate how devastated I was in my early twenties to have my dance career destroyed by a debilitating disease. My life soon became an obsession in knowing where every single bathroom was, wherever I was- assuming I would dare to leave the house. The amount of pain, accidents, blood-loss, and threats from doctors who wanted to remove my colon left me basically bed-ridden and severely depressed. For way too many years.

Had I floated along in a mediocre state of health, my research, education, training and clinical practice would have never have come to be. It was through deep, deep despair in hospitalizations weighing 80 lbs, surviving on insanely high doses of steroids that I began a 25+ year journey of studying digestive health. My life became a mission of trying to figure out what the ROOT CAUSE of my disease was. Because I sure as hell knew it wasn't just an "auto-immune" disease.

With an extreme passion for herbology from a very young age, my initial studies led me to receiving a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine. I fell in love with Oriental philosophy and the study of elements in nature that mirror our internal mechanisms. I was particularly drawn to this system of medicine for its focus on pattern recognition as well as its awareness of spirit in relation to health and well-being.

I found myself to be a mediocre acupuncturist at best, yet an instinctive, strong herbalist. With a keen ability to sense energetic patterns and identify organ disharmony in accordance with oriental diagnostic principles, I decided to focus my efforts and practices on such.

Although I so badly wanted Chinese medicine to heal all those I came into contact with including myself, I quickly realized that it fell short. My Colitis still had a long way to go, and I began to see that these modern day times were bringing patients in to me whose symptoms simply did not budge from just acupuncture and herbs. I started to understand that all of the new chemical exposure we face alongside GMO's, processed foods, heavy metal and environmental toxicity, mycotoxins, chemtrails, new infectious exposures, insane levels of stress (on and on and on) were creating unprecedented epidemics of chronic illness that demanded more in treatment than just herbs and needles. And so began my path with Functional Medicine.

I became certified in Functional Medicine in 2013 and never looked back. FM is most interested in finding root-casue of disease, and addressing "toxicity that's causing deficiency". My practice, for almost a decade now, is a fascinating blend of Eastern and Western medicine, and can be summarized as an integrative approach. I only use the most cutting-edge labs that exist to properly identify all the pieces in the chronically ill, followed by treatment with the most researched and effective nutraceuticals on the market. I truly believe that the combination of Oriental concepts of medicine with Western Biochemistry equal the highest caliber of treatment.

My flare for ancient, Oriental concepts of medicine brings a poised approach in working with patients, meeting them with the grace in which they deserve. I believe most doctors have lost spirit in treating patients, and for this I am sad.

My dedication to science, biochemistry and all of the new information coming to light behind root-cause of disease offers a solution oriented, steadfast and confident approach in treating patients, and for this I am glad.

Such vulnerability in sharing my story has created a safe harbor for others.......way too many are silently suffering. This platform has brought profound fulfillment. I am deeply interested in your story.

With certainty I can say that my greatest passion lies in helping those still suffering recover. Sometimes you simply need someone who has been in your shoes to tell you that you absolutely can get better- to truly believe in you. And I do.
